'When we first took over it was our vision to transform Mowbrays into a warm, welcoming, family owned neighbourhood coffee shop and kitchen which had a positive, friendly atmosphere. We were driven to provide our customers with delicious, fresh, home cooked food and irresistible, affordable speciality coffee and teas which provide a genuine alternative to the big chains. Our aim is to create a relaxed, European coffee shop feel, with a strong, varied café menu, which caters for all requirements. We hope that Mowbrays will become a heartbeat for the community, where friends can gather for great food, great drink and conversation to match.'

Mowbrays philosophy is to build strong working relationships with local, independent producers in order to not only help support but also to showcase what they have to offer. This in turn enables us to proudly bring our customers products which are supplied fresh and delivered daily by local businesses. Our core ingredients are sourced locally from award winning producers, our sausage comes from the multi award-winning Redhill Farm who also supply Lords Cricket Ground, Wimbledon, James Martin & Jamie Oliver. Our bacon & poultry is also sourced locally from Medley Farm, Belton and are eggs are delivered fresh from the farm on a weekly basis. Our bread is baked and delivered fresh to our kitchen from the skilled artisan bakers at Albion Bakery, Epworth. Our delicious pies and gourmet quiches are delivered straight from the Yorkshire Baker and are freshly baked on site, daily, in our kitchen.

Occasionally, we have to go a little further to bring our customers the very best the UK has to offer, Whilst scouring the country we came across an incredible family owned business, Scarlett & Mustard who supply us with our dressings, curds and marmalades. They truly are a wonderful company who can boast an incredible 22 great taste awards. We cook, bake, marinade & dress most of our products with there yummy stuff - there's no wonder our baked goods don't last long!

Inspired by the oldest tradition in England, the 'Haxey Hood,' Mowbrays name derives from Lady De Mowbray who was the wife of Isle landowner John De Mowbray. Legend says that in the 14th century Lady Mowbray was out riding on the hill between Haxey & Westwoodside when her silk riding hood was blown away by the wind. It is said that 13 farm workers working in the field nearby rushed to help and chased the hood all over this field. Eventually it was caught by a farm worker however he was too shy to hand it back to the lady himself and so gave it to another worker to hand over. Lady Mowbray thanked the farm worker who handed it over to her and descirbed him as acting like a Lord. However, she described the worker who first caught the hood as a fool. She was left so amused with this act of chivaly and the resutling chase, that she donated thirteen acres of land on the condition that the chase for the hood would be re-enacted each year. Over the centuries this re-enactment has become known as the 'Haxey Hood' and is held annually on the 12th day of Christmas, the 6th of January.
